Prof. Jens H. Mikkelsen has received 262.500 DKK from Alzheimer-forskningsfonden for the project "Synaptisk densitet i hjerner fra patienter med Alzheimers sygdom".
Abstract: The overall aim of this project is to develop methods to determine the density of synapses in the brain. Patients with Alzheimer's disease are thought to have a reduced number of synapses in some brain areas, and this number could better correlate with the patient's symptoms than the markers available today. We therefore expect the new methods to be used for a more precise diagnosis than is possible today. We especially expect that the new assays (and perhaps imaging) will be better in predicting symptoms and map the course of the disease, thereby providing an improved effort in the form of more precise medical treatment and other treatment initiatives at the right time during the patient's illness.
