Congratulations to Gitte Moos Knudsen who has received 4.432.749 DKK in support from DFF for the project 'Sleep, brain oscillations, and brain microstructure in mild traumatic brain injury'.
The project will be initiated August 1, 2025 and will last 4 years.

Summary: In Denmark, traumatic brain injury (TBI) affects 4% of the population. While over 85% of cases are mild (mTBI), 30% of these patients still suffer from headaches, cognitive issues, somatic symptoms, and sleep disturbances six months post-injury. The lack of effective treatment makes understanding the pathophysiological mechanisms behind persistent symptoms a priority.
This project will investigate the link between sleep disturbances, brain microstructure, oscillations, and synaptic density in mTBI patients, in the acute phase and after 3 months. Brain oscillations related to fluid dynamics or glymphatic function and microstructural changes will be measured using ultrafast and diffusion-weighted MRI, while synaptic density will be assessed with [11]C-UCB-J PET. Patients are followed clinically up to 1 year after.
We aim for the study’s results to provide insights into prolonged post-concussive symptoms and incomplete recovery in mTBI, potentially guiding future treatments.
